COAL TOWNSHIP — The death of an inmate at SCI-Coal Township on Monday was determined by Northumberland County Coroner James F. Kelley to be a self-inflicted hanging.

Superintendent Thomas McGinley reported in a press release that John Schreck, 38, was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 12:09 p.m. Prison staff provided life-saving measures until facility medical personnel arrived, he said. They used an automated external defibrillator and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until relieved by ambulance personnel, according to McGinley. Schreck was taken to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital.
