Doughnut Day precedes Lenten season

Continuing a time-honored tradition in observance of Doughnut Day, Fastnacht Day, Shrove Tuesday or whatever the day before Ash Wednesday might be known, the Coal Township Emergency Squad baked and sold thousands of doughnuts Tuesday at its headquarters on West Pine Street. The project has been a fundraiser for more than 20 years by the squad to maintain the fleet of emergency vehicles it uses when answering fire and rescue calls. Volunteers participating in Tuesday’s Doughnut Day project on behalf of the emergency squad were, from left, Kevin Malukas, Shawn Myers, Jason Leiby, Nathan Scicchitano, Lea Schicchitano, Jean Campbell and Tracy Leiby.
