SELINSGROVE — A program to empower girls and provide enrichment and career exploration takes place Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Susquehanna Valley Country Club, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Soroptimist International of Snyder, Union and Northumberland Counties Inc., invites school counselors, parents and teachers to invite female students to its day-long conference, Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls. At this conference, girls will learn about career and educational opportunities. A panel of professional women from various career fields will speak over the lunch hour (i.e. education, healthcare, technology, agriculture, cosmetology, military, culinary and entrepreneurship).

The Degenstein and Selinsgrove Area Community Foundations have assisted with funding for this program so there is no cost to students to participate in this event. Throughout the day, the girls will participate in sessions presented by professional women on the following topics: rising above obstacles, turning failure into success, balancing stress, building relationships and finding personal power.

In addition to learning important life skills, the girls will leave with a variety of other resources and fun items, including a “Dream It, Be It” journal and pen for keeping track of their goals and a certificate of participation. Attendees also will have the opportunity to speak with local professional women and perhaps arrange an ongoing mentorship with a woman whose career interests them. Prizes including a Fitbit, an Amazon Fire tablet, Visa gift cards, school and beauty supply gift certificates, and gift certificates to local restaurants, movie theaters and other businesses will be raffled off.

This conference is intended for girls who demonstrate great potential but lack the resources or support to plan meaningfully for their futures, or who otherwise face barriers to success. Those who register will join participants from schools throughout the three counties — Snyder, Union and Northumberland — served by Soroptimist International.

If you are a parent, teacher, school counselor or community leader who would like to register a girl for this event, call or write to Heather Britton, Dream It, Be It committee chair, at or call 570-939-1365. The deadline for registering is Oct. 19.
