SHAMOKIN — After hearing no response to bangs on the front door, Thomas Traver was prepared to barge into 914 N. Shamokin St. to alert occupants of a fire.

Heavy smoke flowed from a door, windows and eaves of the other side of the half-double, 912 N. Shamokin St., Friday afternoon as Traver frantically banged on the door and his wife, Stacey, spoke with dispatchers at the Northumberland County communications center.
