SUNBURY — Northumberland County President Judge Charles H. Saylor signed a petition Monday afternoon appointing retired state Troopers Todd Hoover and Olegero “Gary” Martinez as police officers in Shikellamy School District.

On July 31, the district filed a petition to appoint Hoover and Martinez to enhance security in and around district buildings.

The petition is a normal procedure for a school entity to create its own police force.

At a July 11 school board meeting, Hoover was hired at $28 per hour, effective July 12, pending approval and receipt of all mandated clearances and documentation. Martinez was hired at $25 per hour with the same stipulations.

The former troopers will be armed, have the power to arrest and authority to issue citations for summary offenses and detain students until the arrival of local law enforcement.

The former troopers will start their duties prior to Sept. 3, the first day of school.
