COAL TOWNSHIP — A 31-year-old Coal Township man, who committed suicide, was found in the West Pine Street apartment of a woman charged with drug offenses last week.
An employee of the Northumberland County Coroner’s Office confirmed Wednesday that the deceased died from a suicide at 1309 W. Pine St.
The man, whose body was discovered by two female probation officers at 11:10 a.m. March 6, reportedly died between 1 and 3 a.m.
The probation officers made the grim discovery after arriving at the apartment of Samantha H. Scicchitano, 39, who allegedly had been in a relationship with the deceased.
The probation officers went to check on Scicchitano, who was on supervision, after complaints were made by other tenants in the apartment building at 1309 W. Pine St. about Scicchitano carrying on inside her apartment and making bizarre comments all night.
Upon entering Scicchitano’s apartment, the probation officers found the man lying face down on the floor. No one else except Scicchitano was present in the apartment.
Police subsequently took Scicchitano into custody and charged her with possession of crystal methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Scicchitano told police she and the deceased had been smoking spice.
Scicchitano was committed to Northumberland County Jail on a probation violation prior to the drug charges being filed.
Detective Matthew Hashuga, who filed the charges against Scicchitano, said she will not be charged in connection with the suicide.
Although she was inside the apartment while the man was reportedly dead for multiple hours and didn’t report the death, Hashuga said her failure to do so doesn’t warrant criminal charges.
