MOUNT CARMEL — The top five students in the Class of 2019 were announced at Mount Carmel Area Junior/Senior High School’s Class Night on Monday.

The valedictorian is Ava McGee and the salutatorian is John Ayers. The rest of the top five is Hailey Swaldi, third; Miranda Fiamoncini, fourth; and Dante Sabolchick, fifth.

Valedictorian — Ava McGee is a daughter of John and Elizabeth McGee, of Mount Carmel. She is class secretary, a distinguished honor roll student, vice president of the National Honor Society, treasurer of the Quill and Scroll Honor Society, a member of the Masque and Gavel Honor Society and this year’s Mount Carmel Area Laurel Queen representative. Ava is president of the Interact, reading and peer mediation cub. She is sergeant-at-arms of the tech ed club, secretary of the Future Nurses of America and a member of the Future Teachers of America, Future Business Leaders of America, pep club, art club and the Carmelite Yearbook staff. She previously won the Elks, Eagles and Rotary student of the month awards and the school board Merit Award. Ava likes running and spending time with family and friends. She plans to attend Bucknell University to major in biology pre-med.

Salutatorian — John Ayres is a son of John and Linda Ayres, of Kulpmont. He is a distinguished honor roll student and president of both the National Honor Society and the National Athletic Honor Society. He is a three-year captain of the football team, won the Mike Terry Award three times and the Great American Rivalry Series Scholar Athlete for 2018, is a senior captain of the baseball and basketball teams and an Ed Romance Scholar Athlete Award winner. John is a member of the Future Nurses of America, Future Teachers of America, Latin club, Interact club and student council. He has won the Rotary student of the month and Elks junior student of the month. Outside of school, he is a Holy Angels Kulpmont church volunteer and a Diocese of Harrisburg servant leader and volunteers at the Mount Carmel Celebration of Special Athletes. John enjoys spending time with his friends, watching sports, lifting and golfing. He plans to attend Bloomsburg University to pursue a degree in accounting and play football.

Hailey Swaldi is a daughter of Tom and Lori Swaldi, of Marion Heights. She is a distinguished honor roll student, secretary of the National Honor Society and vice president of the National Athletic Honor Society. Hailey is on the track and field, soccer and cross country teams and was awarded the Ed Romance Scholar Athlete Award and the Schuylkill County Women’s Athletic Association Female Scholar Athlete Award. She participates in Future Business Leaders of America, the yearbook, ski club and debate team. She is an altar server at Divine Redeemer parish and enjoys reading and reviewing novels, working out and lifting, and spending time with family and friends. Hailey plans to attend the University of Sciences in Philadelphia to major in pharmacology and toxicology.

Miranda Fiamoncini is a daughter of David and Lisa Fiamoncini, of Atlas. She is a distinguished honor roll student and treasurer of the National Honor Society, secretary of the National Athletic Honor Society, vice president of the Quill and Scroll Honor Society and treasurer of the Masque and Gavel Honor Society. She is captain of the swim team, a previous student council class president, a marching band librarian and a member of the symphonic band, wind ensemble and pep band. She was a member of the tech ed club and secretary of the debate club. Miranda participated in the school musical and Future Teachers of America and was the science club vice president in her sophomore year. She previously won the Rotary, Merit, Junior High Pride and Elks student of the month awards and is an altar server at Divine Redeemer parish. Miranda’s interests include reading, playing with her dogs and spending time with friends and family. She plans to attend Penn State University’s main campus to major in biomedical engineering.

Dante Sabolchick is a son of Jim Sabolchick and Christina Hurlburt, of Marion Heights. He is a distinguished honor roll student, a member of the National Honors Society and the SAT 1300 and 700 clubs and participates in marching and concert band. Dante is in the Trio Upward Bound program and is a member of the art club. He enjoys video games, art and listening to music. He plans to attend Bloomsburg University to pursue a degree in digital forensics.

Mount Carmel Area’s graduation ceremony is 7 p.m. Friday in the high school gymnasium. The guest speaker is Cheryl Latorre, a former school district superintendent and a member of the MCA Class of 1976.
