MOUNT CARMEL — Mount Carmel Area School Board Merit Award winners for November were announced and recognized at the January board meeting.

Elementary winner

The elementary winner was second-grade student, Gavin Lubeskie. Gavin was nominated by his teacher, Kristy Bogovich, who said, “There is no one more deserving of receiving the merit award than Gavin. He is truly one of a kind. Gavin is always kind to everyone he comes in contact with. He is extremely helpful in class to both me and the other students, and because of this I call him my “student teacher.”

Bogovich continued, “Everyone knows they can count on him if they need help with anything, and he is always eager to lend a hand. Gavin is also a very hard worker and takes pride in his work. He is the type of student who would willingly and happily complete his classwork before having recess. I have never heard him complain about anything. He has an outstanding personality and really stands out as a leader, which is why he is a friend to everyone. Gavin is very bright and has such a passion for learning, and he enjoys sharing his knowledge with the class. This is my first year as a second grade teacher, and I feel very lucky to have Gavin in my class. He truly makes it a brighter place.”

Gavin is in the gifted program at MCAE. He enjoys working on circuits and creative projects. Outside of school, Gavin is involved in sports year-round. He plays SYBL basketball, club soccer, Locust Gap baseball, and MCA Blast flag football. He also belongs to Divine Redeemer Parish, Mount Carmel, where he participates in CCD and is preparing for his First Holy Communion this spring.

In his free time, Gavin enjoys playing with friends and riding both his bike and hoverboard. Gavin is the son of Carole and Greg Lubeskie. He has two sisters, Chloe and Carly. Grandparents are Linda Weissinger, Mount Carmel, and Joe and Lucille Lubeskie, Kulpmont.

The high school winner is senior, Danielle Hooper. Danielle was nominated by chemistry teacher Tammy Michaels, who said, “Danielle has a great personality and is willing to help others. She is the president of student council, and volunteers at all of the Student Council activities. She also does community service at church and camps. Danielle shows the ability to balance her academics and activities and stays on top of everything.”

Danielle has previously won student council student of the month and the Elks student of the month. She is the President of Student Council and is a member of National Honor Society, calc club, yearbook, and pep clubs. She is a four-year member of the class musical and a captain of the cheerleading squad, for both football and basketball.
