COAL TOWNSHIP — After nearly two years without school district music concerts and honor band festivals, the sound of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District Orchestra reverberated off the auditorium walls of the Shamokin Area Middle/High School.

The orchestra, consisting of about 75 high-school musicians representing schools in Bradford, Snyder, Lycoming, Columbia, Union, Montour, Northumberland, Sullivan and Tioga counties, performed a concert Friday night at the school in Coal Township. The orchestra was directed by Laura (Cooper) Joella, a 1996 graduate of Shamokin and director of orchestral studies and the music director/conductor of the University Symphony Orchestra at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.
