KULPMONT – At 7 p.m. Thursday the American Legion, Post 231, will hold a regularly scheduled meeting with the Home Association meeting to follow.
Since the last meeting of the Post, a flag detail met on Nov. 11 at Roosevelt Court, 11th and Spruce streets, to salute the colors in recognition of all who served since World War I.
Taps was played by bugler and Post Adjutant Joe Meyer. Riflemen Joe Durovick, Joe Fisher and E.W. “Ace” Puddy fired the three-volley salute out of respect to veterans.
Chaplain Andrew Bednarchick officiated the ceremony with raising of the American flag accompanied by the playing of the national anthem. The ceremony team then moved to the Post flagpole, at 856 Ash St., for a short program.
Director John Rubendall reported that the Post Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program was a success. The program provided numerous donations and toys for area children.
Commander Dave Shinskie remarked that large, framed pictures of the Vietnam War Memorial Wall and a World War II Navy seaman kissing a woman were recently donated to the Post by Jim and Bob Nolan, of Den-Mar Gardens, and Nolan’s Lumber, in Kulpmont.
Shinskie thanked all citizens for supporting the American Legion. He recognized Legion officers, “A” and “B” members, the Sons of the American Legion, Post 231, and the Post Ladies Auxiliary for helping with projects in 2022.
Members of the Sons of the American Legion are selling February calendars as a fundraiser.
Commander Joe Dowkus reported a successful fall project where ten picnic benches were sold, which will adorn the Legion picnic grounds after they are painted. Each will hold an inscribed plate in dedication to loved ones.
Squadron Adjutant Aaron Pochakilo reminded all that annual dues are due for 2023.
The Ladies Auxiliary held their annual Christmas Party and gave presents to children at the Post. The Home Association held a Breakfast on Jan. 15 and will sponsor numerous tailgates during the NFL playoffs.
