Kashner

Dick Kashner, third from right, is shown Friday with five of his former baseball players and daughter, Kathy (Kashner) Vetovich, in front of a mural dedicated to him on North Market Street in Shamokin. The players include, from left, Neil Whary, Dave Janaskie, Dave Salwocki, Keith Martin and Ernie Yeager.

SHAMOKIN — Outstanding mentor, great coach, inspirational leader, role model, father figure.

Those were some of the apt descriptions of local legendary baseball coach, longtime Bunker Hill Sports Complex caretaker and community leader Dick Kashner offered by five of his former players who got together for dinner Friday night with Kashner, his wife, Merle, and daughter, Kathy (Kashner) Vetovich at the Heritage Restaurant at Market and Arch streets.
