COAL TOWNSHIP — The 16th annual Salvation Army Adult Basketball Tournament is slated for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 5, 6 and 7, at the Shamokin Area Middle/High School gymnasium.

In addition to the men’s teams participating, once again, this year the tournament is looking to branch out and run a women’s bracket.

Tournament directors Brian Persing and Chris Venna also announced that they are once again looking for local businesses to make monetary donations to help pay for PIAA officials to work the tournament. For nearly two decades, local PIAA officials have donated their time to work more than 200 games.

Businesses or individuals can be a sponsor at a cost of $100. Last year, local businesses contributed more than $1,000 toward the tournament, making it one of the most successful tournaments ever.

“This year we are hoping to better that mark,” Persing said.

Last year, the following businesses and organizations donated to the tournament: Bernie Romanoski Sports Hall of Fame, Olvany Insurance Agency, Snyder’s Restaurant, Varano Insurance Agency, Subway (Coal Township), Lincoln Towers, Irish Isle Provisions, Bumpers Beverages and East End Fire Co.

The tournament will continue to operate in the same manner as it has in recent years with a double-elimination format. The entry fee per team is $150 and the deadline to register is March 31. Interested teams should contact Chris Venna at 570-205-1144 for more information.
