SHAMOKIN — Historic St. Edward’s Church in the 200 block of North Shamokin Street, which is now Mother Cabrini Church, was destroyed by fire 50 years ago today.
It is recognized as one of the city’s most devastating fires, with the worst being the Walnut Towers Inn blaze on West Walnut Street near Weis Markets on Jan. 2, 1977, which claimed the lives of nine people.
