COAL TOWNSHIP — A student faces a misdemeanor charge of simple assault and summary counts of harassment and disorderly conduct in connection with the investigation into an alleged attempted sexual assault at Shamokin Area Middle/High School.
Coal Township Detective Matthew Hashuga on Monday charged Christopher M. Stewart, 18, of Shamokin.
Police said Friday they were investigating a Nov. 2 incident after the alleged victim’s mother addressed the issue on Facebook.
Shamokin Area Middle-High School Principal Todd Hockenbroch said last week that the district couldn’t get into specifics about student discipline but that officials were made aware of the incident and immediately contacted local law enforcement and parents of both students.
After word of the incident spread, two additional students came forward to report encounters with the same individual.
On Facebook, Sheila Ebersole said an 18-year-old male grabbed her daughter and tried to pull her down a stairwell and into a basement area in order to force her to perform a sex act. She said the incident happened during school hours.
