Fatal accident

Northumberland County Coroner James Kelley, right, inspects a vehicle following a fatal accident on Route 225 Tuesday morning.

LITTLE MAHANOY TOWNSHIP — A male in his early 20s was declared dead at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday by Northumberland County Coroner James Kelley following a one-vehicle accident on Route 225, just west of Trevorton.

The male, who has not yet been identified, was ejected from the vehicle along with another person, who was transported to an area hospital by ambulance.

Life Flight helicopter was placed on standby, but did not depart.

Police have yet to identify which of the victims had been driving the vehicle.

The driver is believed to have lost control after the vehicle hit a curb and went onto an embankment before hitting a utility pole. The vehicle rolled over across the highway before coming to a rest.

The highway was closed at about 9:30 a.m. while the coroner’s office was on scene and as state police created an accident reconstruction. It remained closed as crews worked to fix the split utility pole.

State police at Stonington are investigating the accident.
