COAL TOWNSHIP — Police said a township woman was the victim of a phone scam in the last month through which she lost a significant amount of money.
Patrolman Cody Rebuck said the victim was told she owed money to the IRS and threatened the victim with jail time if she told anyone about the phone calls before the total was paid. The victim was instructed to buy Google Play gift cards and forward the numbers on the backs of the cards to the suspect.
Police remind the public that the IRS will not contact anyone via telephone nor will they accept payments in Google Play gift cards, or ask anyone how much money is in his or her bank account.
Anyone who receives these types of phone calls may contact the department at 570-644-0333.
