Simple assault and harassment
ATLAS — Matthew Luis Hernandez, 25, of 105 W. Girard St., Apt. C, Mount Carmel, was charged by Mount Carmel Township Patrolman Kevin Malukas with one misdemeanor count of simple assault and one summary count of harassment following a July 20 incident. Police accuse the defendant of punching a roommate, Clifford Muthard III, in the head following a verbal altercation.
Flight to avoid apprehension
MOUNT CARMEL — Patrolman Justin Stelma has charged Brandon Taylor Chapman, 24, of 476 Girard St., with one misdemeanor count each of flight to avoid apprehension, possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia, reckless endangerment, fleeing or attempting to elude police and resisting arrest.
The charges were filed following a July 25 incident, when the defendant allegedly failed to respond to verbal commands by police and fled on a bicycle until being Tasered. Following his apprehension, Chapman, who had an active warrant for his arrest through Northumberland County Adult Probation, also admitted to injecting narcotics and was found to be in possession of a syringe in his pocket.
KULPMONT — George Haas Jr., 19, of 221 East Avenue, Mount Carmel, has been charged by Chief Nathan Foust with multiple misdemeanor counts including marijuana possession, prohibited offensive weapons and possession of drug paraphernalia, following a May 24 incident. Following a routine traffic stop, the defendant was placed under arrest, having an active warrant out of the Northumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Police also allegedly found Haas to be in possession of a number of drug-related items including methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
ELYSBURG — Patrolman Matthew Filarski has charged James Robert Lyden, 46, of 401 W. Fourth St., Mount Carmel, with driving under the influence of alcohol on July 1.
According to police, the defendant drove his vehicle, with high beams on, at a high rate of speed toward a police cruiser. Following a traffic stop, Lyden was allegedly observed to have bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.
Standard field sobriety tests revealed that Lyden was unable to safely operate a motor vehicle. After submitting to a blood draw, Lyden’s blood alcohol concentration was found to be 0.209%.
MOUNT CARMEL — Sean Cooke, 28, of 42 East Avenue, has been charged by Patrolman Tyler Herbster with possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia. On July 17, at the defendant’s residence, police allegedly found a marijuana grinder and pipe, in addition to smelling a strong odor of marijuana throughout the interior of the property. According to police, Cooke confessed to having smoked marijuana.
