This past July, I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to visit my best friend in Germany, where he has been stationed with the U.S. Army since 2016. During this trip, his wife planned an overnight visit to Prague.
While walking around the most beautiful city I’ve ever seen, I felt as if my eyes couldn’t take in every bit of architecture and every monument even if I would have spent a lifetime there. Every inch of that place was filled with overwhelming beauty.
As we wandered the roadways and passages, the sight of a firefighter’s helmet caught my eye. While doing this job, I have witnessed up close the incredible bravery of the men and women who volunteer in our local fire departments, and they are among the most admirable people I have ever encountered.
So naturally, the helmet caught my attention. I wandered over and saw the bronze helmet sitting on top of a large rock with a plaque that read, “
“A firefighter is a person who lives two lives, one for themselves and one for others. Therefore the life of a firefighter holds a true understanding of all that is human. Dedicated to the memory of the 343 New York firefighters who lost their lives on the 11th September 2001. We shall never forget.”
There on a random street in Prague, I stood with my friends silenced at the power of that little memorial. I felt tears forming in my eyes and gratitude burst from me for my pride in this country and for the men and women of all professions who keep us safe.
All the way across the ocean, our brave heroes are being remembered, and they will never be forgotten.
