CATAWISSA RR — Mike Yeager was reappointed president of the Southern Columbia Area School Board at Tuesday’s organization meeting and Tim Vought was appointed vice president.

The reorganization meeting was held at the Columbia-Montour Area Vocational Technical School and was followed by the December monthly meeting.

The first reading of the revised bullying policy was approved and is available on the district’s website for public reading. Revised language was added to the policy stating “students who witness bullying are expected and encouraged to report it to their building principal or other district employee.”

A vote to approve the new language in the policy will be held in January.

The board approved a list of projects the district is interested in exploring as part of an energy saving’s project, which include districtwide LED lighting upgrades, solar school zone traffic sign flasher, HVAC in the old gymnasium and locker rooms, a partial roof recoat and new roof access installation at the high school as well as elementary and high school standardized door lock upgrades.

Superintendent Paul Caputo said the top focus is installing LED lighting, which has been part of the district’s plan since 2014. The board authorized advertising for an energy company to submit requests for proposals to perform an investment grade audit and study the energy benefits the school would receive through the lighting switch.

Caputo said the district is able to do the LED installation, but the board is attempting to learn which of the additional projects can be completed with money saved by the lighting switch.

An athletic fund transfer was approved in the amount of $25,000, as was a motion to approve upcoming bills within a 45-day period. Caputo said the meeting was held earlier in the month than usual, so the district has yet to receive monthly statements on all necessary bills requiring payment in December.

The board meeting schedule for 2019 is as follows: Jan. 14 and 21, Feb. 11 and 18, March 11 and 18, April 8 and 15, May 13 and 20, June 10 and 17, July 15, Aug. 12 and 19, Sept. 9 and 16, Oct. 14 and 21, Nov. 11 and 18 and Dec. 4. All meetings will be held in the Southern Columbia Area District Office conference room at 7 p.m., unless otherwise advertised.
