One-vehicle accident on Rt. 61 near Wayside

A teenage girl escaped injury when her car hydroplaned across Route 61 and hit a utility pole early Sunday evening.

COAL TOWNSHIP — A teenager from Zerbe Township escaped injury early Sunday evening when the car she was driving went out of control and crashed on rain-soaked Route 61 between the Brewery Curve and Weigh Scales in Coal Township.

The teenger said she was driving south toward Shamokin and struck a large puddle of water in the traffic lane that caused her car to hydroplane. The vehicle went out of control, crossed the median strip and struck a utility pole on the east side of the highway. It continued forward, coming to a stop in a grassy area off the eastern berm.

The utlity pole was snapped off near its base and the car had extenive damage and had to be towed. Traffic was tied up on both lanes of travel for a short time.

Coal Township police are investigating the accident which occurred during rainfall that continued from early morning through Sunday night.
