I recently engaged in an email exchange with an old friend and colleague who began the conversation with the following message:

“Fasten your seat belt, my friend. We are headed for the nastiest, bloodiest presidential race in our history. I see it as nothing less than a supreme test between democracy and fascism. Concentration camps at the border and Trump’s characterization of immigrants as an ‘infestation’ should make our blood run cold with echoes from the not-too-distant past. Let me know when you think it’s time to man the barricades.
