The News-Item’s cheers and jeers from the past week of news:

Cheers to the organizers of the Shamokin fireworks show, that, despite a rain postponement, once again put on a fabulous spectacle for area residents to enjoy. Less than a half hour of flashes and bangs are the result of several days of back-breaking work and several months of fundraising efforts by many behind-the-scenes actors who deserve recognition. While watching the show from atop a roof on Market Street, it was not the independence of the United States that first came to mind. It was the fact that despite the loss of the coal industry, despite the loss of jobs and despite the drop in population in our area — there’s still a lot to be proud of here in Shamokin.
