The News-Item’s cheers and jeers from the past week of news:

Cheers to the countless volunteers who helped propel the lower anthracite region into the holiday season. Each year, hundreds, if not thousands, of locals embrace the giving spirit beginning with Thanksgiving and ending around Christmas. Whether it’s spending time ringing a bell at a Salvation Army kettle, partaking in numerous events through service organizations or churches or simply doing a special deed — those who put the time in to show they care make the world a better place — and we thank them for it.
