To the Editor: It was a true pleasure to be in downtown Shamokin last Saturday afternoon. The air was alive with the low rumble of off-road vehicles and the high spirits of riders, volunteers and members of the community. The enthusiasm of the hundreds of riders was obvious as they rode smiling and waiving by the volunteer tents. The volunteers I spoke with were filled with pride in their community and the hope that events like “Taking It To The Streets” will bring prosperity back to Shamokin.
Online, I’ve seen pictures of Shamokin in an earlier day. The restaurants were filled and there were lines at the gas stations. Customers poured in and out of businesses on Independence and Market streets. On Saturday afternoon, those were not only images of Shamokin’s past, but also its present. Taking in the new restaurants, the riders and the phenomenal community spirit, we could glimpse a future where Shamokin is the vibrant tourist destination in our region.
I want to congratulate the visionaries who took a leap of faith to make “Taking It To The Streets” a reality. The City of Shamokin, Coal Township, the AOAA board and local businesses showed the power and success of combined effort. They are deeply committed to making events like this even better in the future. To the people of Shamokin, I say a heartfelt thank you for a truly outstanding day and for your commitment to a better future in our county.
