To the editor: The 17th annual Great Kulpmont Cruise, postponed from this past Sunday, will be held on Sunday. What many people don’t understand is that we, in our local area, had very little rain.
I received phone calls from many other areas that send many vehicles to our cruise. I heard the same story from Scranton, Wilkes Barre, Hazleton, Halifax, Schuylkill County, Lebanon, Harrisburg and York areas that it was raining hard. All of them told me they can’t come to the cruise because of the weather in their area.
Antique, classic vehicles, street rods and motorcycle owners won’t gamble and bring their vehicles out in bad weather. That is the main reason we chose to postpone our cruise.
Many local people who come to view the popular event and those who planned to have family get togethers and parties also called to check if the cruise was still going to happen.
We apologize for the inconvenience, but we can’t control the weather and the weather dictates the success of any outdoor event.
The schedule remains the same: Register cruise vehicles from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Judging will be between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. A cruise for antique, classics and street rods will be at 3 p.m.
Motorcycle owners be at Holy Angels picnic grounds by 1 p.m. There is no registration fee for motorcycles because they will not be judged for awards. The motorcycle fun run will be held from 2 to 2:15 p.m., followed by the Knoebels characters, who will interact with kids on the cruise route.
We are trying to get a 1923 vintage Harley with a side car attached, as was used in World War I to lead motorcycles.
A surprise guest character will ride in the rumble seat of a 1931 Ford Deluxe Roadster. His initials are D.T.
The Holy Angels concession stand will feature a menu like they prepare for their popular August picnic.
I will be a fun day in Kulpmont on Sunday.
