To the editor: Trump has recently announced his intention to develop and introduce a “patriotic education” and “pro-America curriculum” in our school systems. This will certainly create issues and concerns among educators who have valued academic freedom and an “open inquiry” perspective — a student-centered approach that begins with a student question followed by the student designing and conducting an investigation or experiment and communicating results.
Trump’s plan will certainly create a cultural war over our country’s heritage. This plan will polarize and divide this country into opposing groups or factions. It is an ideologically-driven approach that is harmful and hostile to our current education system that promotes questioning, investigation and debate regarding issues.
