To the editor: There was a time not so long ago when this country was governed almost exclusively by the common sense, patriotic principles outlined by our forefathers in our Constitution. These were men of almost uncanny vision and wisdom, as they possessed the ability to foresee issues that could present themselves 200 years into the future, and they put into place the proper provisions for addressing them.

Our forefathers fought the Revolutionary War in order to establish America as a sovereign nation, and our borders evolved as the nation grew. We, as a nation, honored and respected their vision of a nation built on principles of self-reliance, individual effort, love of country, liberty for its citizens and an opportunity to engage in “the pursuit of happiness.” My question is: What happened?

My opinion is that the attempted dismantling of our system of governing began in the 1960s when those of my generation went off to college. Students began to be indoctrinated by increasingly liberal professors who presented a far different view of America than the one we were taught as children. Instead of describing America as a noble nation that gives everyone a chance to be successful through hard work and individual effort, and as a force for good in the world, they set about creating a revisionist version of history that painted a picture of America as a bad country, a racist, imperialist and arrogant nation whose power needs to be curtailed.

Such indoctrination gave rise to the unrest of the late ’60s, characterized by riots on college campuses, turmoil in the streets and the “Hippie Movement.” Ultimately, many of these former radicals, for whatever reason, gravitated to the Democratic Party and are now members of Congress, senators, judges and members of the media, which explains why that party, at the national level, has been hijacked by the left.

The current hysteria over immigration is a manifestation of this left-wing infection, which has destroyed what was formerly “The Party of the Working Man.” Assisting in the spread of this disease is a radical, America-hating leftist media.

We are now witnessing on a daily basis prominent Democrats like Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters and Debbie Wasserman Schultz demanding that we allow just about anyone into the country, no questions asked. They see no need for any type of vetting process whatsoever, or any reason to even limit the number of illegal aliens coming into the country, even though there are estimates that indicate there may be as many as 20 million illegal aliens currently residing here.

Simply giving a free pass to those who break our laws by circumventing the legal immigration process is by no means sufficient for the open borders crowd. We, the taxpayers, are expected to feed, house, clothe and educate these illegals as well. Anyone who has the gall to oppose this obscene waste of our money is labeled a racist. So, if you say, “Wait a minute! I did all those things for my own children, and I shouldn’t be expected to pay for those who shouldn’t be here in the first place,” well, then you are a worthless bigot who needs to be publicly shamed and harassed at every opportunity.

Have you seen the latest insanity perpetrated by the left? Presidential Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders and her family were asked by the owner of the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Virginia, to leave the premises. Why? Because she works for Donald Trump, of course! A few days prior to this, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was harassed, shouted at and eventually forced to leave a restaurant for the same reason. In the same week, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi was harassed, shouted at and threatened by a vicious mob at a movie theater. Congresswoman Maxine Waters not only praised these despicable (and illegal) acts, she actually publicly encouraged others to follow suit, stating, “It’s open season on Trump’s staff. They won’t be able to go to a restaurant, they won’t be able to go to a gas station … I have no sympathy for these people.” She further encouraged this outrageous behavior by advising, “If you see them at a gas station, gather a crowd, shout at them.” Bear in mind, these are the words of a United States senator.

By and large, the liberal media has condoned and even praised these criminal acts. They have also stoked the fires by publishing photos of immigrant children allegedly being kept in little more than cages by Trump’s border agents. Except that (woops) those photos were taken during the Obama administration in 2014. The media has relentlessly pounded out the mantra that, unless you support unfettered illegal aliens flooding our country, unless you believe it’s your responsibility to feed, clothe, house and educate these people, you are a racist, bigoted redneck who has no right to appear in public. It matters not that Mexico has a huge concrete wall, complete with built-in guard towers on its border with Guatemala. It is of no consequence that, during the Obama administration, a U.S. Marine inadvertently crossed the border into Mexico and was cuffed to a bed, beaten and abused for 24 days before finally being released. And so what if, during his 1995 State of the Union (SOTU), President Clinton called for more border enforcement and repeatedly referred to those who illegally cross our border as “illegal aliens.” Oh, and didn’t Obama brag during his 2013 SOTU speech about how many illegals he deported? The hypocrisy is stunning.

Both parties (yes, Republicans aren’t much better) talk incessantly about a “sensible immigration bill.” You know what I say? We don’t need no “steeenking” immigration bill (no racism intended). We already have in place a process through which any responsible individual can emigrate to America and be welcomed as a citizen of the United States. It’s referred to as “legal immigration.” Many thousands of our predecessors have followed that procedure when they landed on Ellis Island and literally kissed the ground. If it was good enough for them, it should be good enough for those who now want to come here. Anyone who doesn’t is an illegal alien and should be arrested and deported.

Thank you. I have not heard it put better. My ancestors came here legally and had to work for everything they had. These people are pouring in expecting to be put up. Are the people crying for them going to take them in? Where will they live and where will they work? A good start is to come in legally and take it from there. At this point in time we cannot even care for our own. How about our homeless and poor. How about our opioid epidemic killing and disabling our people? Help out your neighbor instead of carrying around a sign. And while I'm at it at least the children that were detained were being taken care of and they are alive. I don't understand how the same people worrying about the detainees at the border are also worried to death that with the new supreme court justice will take away their right to kill their babies. How can this be so? We are going to h--- in a hand basket.

Well said. We need to take care of our own first. Who gives a s--- about how many of our young people are dying right here? Who wants to take any of the illegals coming in and put them up in their own houses? I've come to the conclusion these people need to have some kind of cause for themselves and don't know what is really going on. My ancestors also came in legally and were handed nothing. Take a look at your own neighbor and their children. Help them.
