To the editor: The steady influx of criminal elements moving here from major cities is a blinding glimpse of the obvious — Shamokin residents need to face reality and understand the dangers of having a municipal police force that’s not adequately staffed and resourced to deal with it.

This didn’t just happen overnight; the tell-tale warning signs are obvious to anybody who has been watching. In most cases of late, there’s not been a one-for-one replacement effort when officers resigned or retired. Even if there were, the number of officers is still insufficient to keep pace with the worsening crime problems.
