To the editor: The reason Trump continues to get so much coverage in the news — and in letters like this — is the fact that he remains the biggest threat to our democracy. His most dangerous lie about a stolen election sows doubt in our voting system, a bedrock of our democracy. Trump does not stand alone. He is responsible for nearly 300 local and state Republicans on the ballot who dispute the 2020 election results. Their ascendency will add to Trump’s power and put our next election in 2024 in jeopardy. Democracy is on the ballot.
People who don’t understand the followers of Trump often describe them as members of a cult. A cult is defined as a group held together by a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person. It has a belief system that has the answers to all of life’s questions and offers solutions according to the leader’s rules. The cult leader cares little about his followers and uses them to further his aims. To cultists the truth matters little.
