SHAMOKIN — A 27-year-old Shamokin man was incarcerated Wednesday morning after being found in possession of 520 bags of heroin during a traffic stop Wednesday morning at Shakespeare and Lombard streets.

Louis Martin Baez Jr., of 218 W. Independence St., Apt. 1, was arraigned at 10:15 a.m. by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III on a felony of possession with intent to deliver heroin, misdemeanors of possession of heroin, driving under the influence of heroin and driving under suspension and a summary of failing to activate his turn signal.

The charges were filed by Cpl. Jarrod Scandle.

Upon stopping a burgundy Chevrolet Impala operated by Baez shortly before 12:30 a.m., Scandle noticed that Baez's pupils were constricted. Baez told the corporal that he had used heroin before being stopped.

After being granted permission by Baez to search the vehicle, police located two plastic bags containing 520 individual bags of heroin and $121 in cash.

Baez was then taken into custody and consented to chemical testing at Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital.

He was incarcerated at SCI-Coal Township in lieu of $100,000 cash bail.

Police said Baez, who was previously charged twice with driving under suspension, failed to activate his turn signal when making a left turn off Franklin Street onto Shakespeare Street.

Police said the Impala driven by Baez is owned by Chelsea Troutman, who is wanted by police.
