Gettysburg becomes eighth school in Pennsylvania to sanction a girls wrestling program

The Gettysburg Area School Board unanimously voted Monday for the district to start a girls wrestling team. Pictured after the vote are, from left, athletic director Casey Thurston, Aurelia Santoyo, Montana DeLawder, Zoey Haines, and head coach Chris Haines.

GETTYSBURG — Montana DeLawder, Aurelia Santoyo and Zoey Haines faced what will probably be the easiest matchup of their wrestling careers Monday evening in the Gettysburg Area Middle School auditorium.

The girls had just finished practice and were now entering the world of local politics. They sat 6 feet apart, masked up, as their adult support team, head coach Chris Haines and athletic director Casey Thurston, laid out to the school board why Gettysburg Area School District should have a sanctioned girls wrestling team.
