ELYSBURG — The public is invited to participate in a four-person scramble at Knoebels Three Ponds Golf Course 9 a.m. Friday to support Southern Columbia High School football and cheerleading teams upcoming trip to Columbia, South Carolina.

The Southern Columbia Area Football and Cheerleading Boosters have also organized a fan bus to the game at $125 per person that will leave the high school on Saturday, Aug. 24, and return on the 26th.

Southern Columbia and Hammond are set to meet 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25. The highly anticipated matchup will be televised on ESPN2 as part of the television sports channel’s high school football kickoff.

Both Southern Columbia and Hammond are coming off undefeated state championship seasons. The Tigers feature ESPN No. 4 ranked player in the country, wide receiver Julian Fleming, an Ohio State commit. The Skyhawks’ defense is led by No. 5 player, defensive end Jordan Burch, as well as No. 224, defensive tackle Alex Huntley, a South Carolina commit.

Tournament Information

Three Ponds manager Mike Thompson and Nickle Plate Bar & Grill manager Matson Pierce are looking forward to this opportunity to support the teams.

“Many Three Ponds members and Nickle Plate patrons are proud supporters of the program,” Thompson said of the Tigers’ football and cheer programs. “We wanted to step up to the plate to help these student athletes be as successful as possible while traveling quite a distance to another team’s home field to start the season.”

Tournament cost is $60 per person, which includes 18 holes, cart, lunch and prizes. Senior-team members and coaching staff will also be present for a meet and greet.

All funds raised from the event will benefit the boosters. The team will travel to South Carolina on Friday, August 23, to practice for the game.

Anyone who is interested being a tournament sponsor or entering a team can call the pro shop at 570-672-9064.

Fan bus

Wes Tillett, president of the boosters, said Tuesday there are 40 seats available on the fan bus to Hammond. The price is just for the bus, but a block of rooms have been reserved at a Microtel, about two miles from the venue. The cost for a room is about $90, which includes a breakfast.

Tillett said fans may also sign up for the trip at Meet the Tigers scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at Ralpho Community Park. Introduction of players and a chicken bar-b-que at $10 apiece will highlight the event.

The final day to sign-up for the bus is Aug. 20. For more details or to reserve a seat contact Tillett at 570-933-2999.

Advanced game tickets for $10 and commemorative T-shirts for $15 are available at the high School. The shirts feature the schools’ logos and date of the game above the phrase “Battle of the States.” Proceeds from the shirts go to the boosters.
