Southern Columbia wins state gold

The Southern Columbia bench runs onto the field after defeating Greensburg Central Catholic 2-1 in the PIAA Class 1A championship game Friday at HersheyPark Stadium.

HERSHEY — Just 34 days ago, Southern Columbia’s girls soccer season looked to be in a scenario considered by many as “Mission Impossible.”

The Tigers suffered their most lopsided loss in recent memory on their home turf at the hands of Central Columbia by a score of 11-2. At that point, the Tigers were faced with a 7-9 record, needing to win their final two regular season games just to have a chance of squeaking into the District 4 Class 1A playoff picture.
