COAL TOWNSHIP — Seven of the nine softball players in Shamokin’s lineup are freshmen, but it’s hard to tell them apart from seasoned veterans with their ability to execute at the plate and play small ball.

During Friday’s game against Juniata, a three-run, two-out rally in the third started with a perfectly placed bunt by leadoff hitter Kennedy Petrovich, who then scored on a bunt attempt Emma Kurtz for the first run of the ballgame. A two-run homer by Annie Hornberger extended the team’s lead to three, and the junior pitcher took care of the rest on the defensive end by tossing a one-hitter and striking out 10 hitters to lift the Indians to a 4-1 win.
