MOUNT CARMEL — North Schuylkill softball got another double-digit win when it beat Lourdes Regional, 15-0, on a chilly Tuesday afternoon.
Schuyler Ossman hit a 2-run inside-the-park home run against OLOL starting pitcher Oceanhanna Haupt in the first inning, to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
The Red Raiders got an infield single from Payton Carl, but Ossman was able to strikeout the side to preserve the North Schuylkill advantage.
In the second frame, the Spartans sent 11 batters to the plate and knocked in eight runs as Courtney Troutman hit a RBI double and teammate Karlie Kessler drilled a pitch for an RBI triple, which helped the visitors increase their lead to 10-0.
“We didn’t make plays today. There were ground balls to the infield we bobbled. We didn’t get outs when we needed to make outs. Balls to the outfield, girls coming in and trying to field the ball and didn’t field the ball. We have to stop making those mistakes,” Lourdes Regional head coach Clay Funk said about the defensive miscues of his team.
The Spartans would erupt for five more runs in the third frame as the final tally mark came when Ashley O’Conner zipped home on a passed ball.
Funk noted that there will be tough games during the season and understands it is a process when it comes to coaching younger players, especially when there have not been many chances to hold practices on their home field.
“We’re young we have two freshman starters, five sophomore starters, one junior and one senior. The junior and senior, this is their second time ever playing softball. Even though we have two upper classmen, they’re still really young,” Funk said about his team.
Lourdes Regional will host Pine Grove on Thursday, at 4:30 p.m.
