Shamokin-MCA wrestling

Shamokin’s Brian Long looks to one of his coaches while controlling Mount Carmel’s Thomas Davitt during a 138-pound bout earlier in the season at Shamokin Area Middle-High School.

With the wrestling dual meet regular season winding down, let’s take the time to check out where teams stand heading into Monday’s District 4 Team Championship opening battles.

As is becoming custom, Southern Columbia will enter the tournament seeded first and be a heavy favorite to win its third consecutive district team title.

The Tigers edged Muncy in last year’s D4 championship match, 30-28, and topped Line Mountain in the 2017 tournament. They finished third in the district in 2016, but managed to still punch the program’s first-ever ticket to the state team meet in Hershey.

The Tigers are looking stronger than ever and have received an influx of young talent, including freshman Kole Biscoe, who helped the Tigers defeat Muncy this season by a hefty margin, 39-26.

While Southern Columbia and Muncy are miles above the pack heading into the postseason, don’t discount Danville, which has built an impressive 15-2 record this year and could play bracket-buster in this year’s duals tournament at Milton.

Pivotal weekend for MCA

For area wrestling fans, all eyes should be on Mount Carmel as the squad travels to Central Columbia on Saturday for its annual season-ending quad-meet melee against the host Blue Jays, Lewisburg and Hughesville.

The Red Tornadoes will look to remain in the top half of the 18-team field to retain home-mat advantage during Wednesday’s first round district matches.
