MILTON — With the District 4 Class 2A Team Championship title on the line, Shane Miller and Cade Linn were looking to get their Southern Columbia team off on the right foot in Saturday night’s rematch with rival Muncy.

It took more than eight minutes, but Miller did his job with a gutsy 1-0 ride-out win over Coleman Good in the opening bout at 152 pounds, and Linn overcome a loss in the semifinals to top standout freshman Ty Nixon to put the Tigers up 6-0.

After back-to-back Muncy wins at 170 and 182, Southern steamrolled the Indians the rest of the way en route to a 47-13 victory in the district duals final at Milton Area High School.

The win was Southern’s 43rd consecutive against D4 opponents and gave the Tigers their third district team title in a row. Southern moves to the state tournament in Hershey’s Giant Center, for a 2 p.m. Thursday match-up with the winner of Monday’s preliminary round match between the District 10 runner-up and the District 7 third-place finisher.

Southern Columbia coach Jerry Marks said it started with Miller, who took on a wrestler who lives up to his surname, with an 11-2 record, and came through in overtime and gutted it out.

Miller battled through three scoreless regulation and two 30-second overtime periods, then got the choice for the rideout, took the top and was able to hold Good down for the win.

“It was a big match to start off with and gave us a good momentum,” said Miller, one of only two seniors on the team (Michael Miner is the other).

“I knew I had to hold him down. That’s when you just have to dig deep and be confident. I rode him for two minutes there and another 30 seconds and I just had to do it for 30 more and I got it done. It felt great,” Miller said.

Linn basically stopped wrestling late in his 6-1 semifinal loss to Mifflinburg’s Jansen Houdeshell, but stormed back with a comfortable win over Nixon.

Marks said, “We all have mental lapses and I think he just had a mental lapse in that match and just coming back and wrestling against Nixon, who’s a good kid, and pretty much dominating 3-0, it was pleasing to see him get back on track.

“You just have to be able to readjust and come back and wrestle well next match,” he said of Linn, a junior.

Indeed, Linn, who missed several weeks at the start of the season because of a football injury, said he shook off the loss and focused on the next one.

“I just have to work back into shape. I just focus on myself and trying to better myself for the post-season,” he said.

Linn didn’t know anything about Nixon but said he just always tries to go out and score as many points as possible, and then score more points than the time before.

He broke a scoreless match with an escape and takedown in the third for all the scoring.

“I dominated the match. He didn’t really do anything and I was aggressive,” Linn said.

Linn said Miller’s rideout win in front of him pumped he and his teammates up.

“That was awesome for Shane. When Shane wins, I feel more confident in myself,” Linn said.

The Tigers (18-0) broke a 6-6 tie with back-to-back first-period falls by Preston Zachman (16 seconds) and Gaige Garcia (20 seconds) at 195 and 220, respectively, as both wrestlers bumped up a weight.

“We put Zachman out at 195 and now we can bump Gaige up to 220 and so it’s really pleasing that our team has come together — the chemistry has come together — and we have some matches we can prepare for down in Hershey,” Marks said.

“We wanted to be the No. 1 team going down there from District 4 instead of No. 2 and we’re happy where we’re positioned,” he said.

Steady junior 285-pounder Lear Quinton topped Cael Hembury 7-2 to keep the Southern train rolling. Getting back to 106, Brady Feese got a 57-second fall and freshman Kole Biscoe rolled up a 20-5 technical fall in 5:04 at 113. Garrett Krebs finished the Southern run with a 6-2 win over Grady Oden to make it 35-6.

Marks said, “Quinton is just a quiet leader. He just doesn’t say anything, you don’t hear a word from him. He’s quieter than a mouse and he just goes out and does his work and he gets a lot of help from (assistant coach and two-time PIAA medalist) Bo Spiller.”

Bryce Vollman momentarily stopped the bleeding for the Indians, whose only two losses were to Southern, with a 4-3 win over Ian Yoder and the Indians forfeited to Patrick Edmondson at 132.

Muncy’s Mario Barberio, who got his 100th career win in the semifinals, majored Miner 12-0 before Gavin Garcia wrapped it up with a 1:39 pin over Christian Good at 145.

The top-seeded Tigers rolled over No. 9 Montoursville, ironically the last D4 team to beat Southern, 58-12 in the quarterfinals and dispatched No. 13 Mifflinburg 58-12 in the semis.

Muncy will also wrestle in Hershey on Thursday versus the District 11 champion. Danville, which topped Central Columbia 37-28 in the third-place match, will travel to Newport in a preliminary match on Monday night with the winner advancing to Hershey.

Southern will look to take the next natural step for the program — winning a state title — after falling to Reynolds in last year’s final.

Linn said, “I think we have a better team this year. We’re more experienced and we’re coming for the state championship.”
