Drew McIntyre retained the WWE heavyweight championship with a victory over Dolph Ziggler, Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro captured the tag team titles from the New Day and Bray Wyatt turned into the Fiend to apparently destroy Braun Strowman in their non-title Swamp Match at last Sunday’s Extreme Rules pay per view. The show got positive reviews for some of the in-ring wrestling action but very negative responses overall due to insultingly lame stipulations and finishes that were apparently booked with an eye toward trying to build some bridges toward Monday’s Raw in what turned out to be an unsuccessful effort to boost that show’s struggling ratings.
This past week also saw AEW Dynamite make a big comeback to thrash NXT in the Wednesday Night Wars, which may or may not have been the reason for a relatively high-profile dispute on a sports talk show. Dynamite scored its biggest margin of victory in the ratings despite a strong NXT program with Keith Lee’s abdication of the North American title creating a couple of three-ways to determine a new champion. Former NXT champ Adam Cole appeared on the Ken McAfee talk show and stormed off in a cursing tirade that looked like it was designed to set up something between the two down the road.
