As we get set to say goodbye to an always fascinating, frequently exciting and very competitive year in the pro wrestling world and welcome the new year of 2022 with the usual curiosity as to what the next 12 months might bring, there isn’t even a whole lot of time or room here to take a deep breath and recap 2021 because things get hot right out of the chute with WWE’s Day I pay-per-view New Year’s night on Peacock and AEW’s world title rematch headlining the big return to TBS on Jan. 5.

The main intrigue for Day I will be the Roman Reigns-Brock Lesnar Universal title bout with Paul Heyman caught between the two. Having been fired recently by the Tribal Chief, it would seem like a return to being Lesnar’s trusted advisor and somehow costing his most recent boss the gold in this one would be a next logical step in what is expected to be a drawn out storyline lasting into WrestleMania in Dallas.
