It has been another very busy week and weekend in the world of pro wrestling with AEW holding a Starrcast Meet and Greet featuring, among others, the enigmatic CM Punk, preceding its third major sold out event All Out, a show that ran last evening past our deadline and was scheduled to crown its heavyweight champion with Chris Jericho and Hangman Page squaring off for the gold. With Jon Moxley — formerly known as Dean Ambrose — unable to work due to a serious staph infection, Pac was inserted into his match with Kenny Omega. There was also a 21-woman Casino Battle Royal on tap for the big event in Las Vegas, but the big question on everyone’s mind was whether or not Punk might appear on the show or agree to come in for the Oct. 2 company debut on TNT.
Meanwhile, WWE had Raw and Smackdown television promoting the upcoming Class of Champions pay-per-view on Monday and Tuesday and an NXT UK Takeover Cardiff card on its network Saturday headlined by UK champion Walter defending against Tyler Bate. Due to the concern about Hurricane Dorian, two NXT house shows in Florida were postponed on the weekend. WWE also rolled out a slick new commercial for the upcoming move of Smackdown to Fox that will be featured on that station’s programming, including the ratings-rich NFL games. Production-wise, nobody does it better and this spot was further proof of it. That can only serve to help ratings when we get to the big war in October.
