Pictured is a logo for the Shamokin Area High School Indians. On Monday, the Washington D.C. professional football organization announced it would abandon the ‘Redskins’ nickname. The Shamokin Indians and Lourdes Regional Red Raiders are not in any discussions of changing their school nicknames as of Tuesday evening.

SHAMOKIN — Normally, there is not much of a trickle-down effect from professional sports to local high school sports.

In these strange times, however, that has not always been the case. For example, when the NFL pushed back the start from its preseason games, the NCAA followed suit shortly after with conferences making their own decisions on football and fall sports. And although the PIAA has not made a decision yet, other states are following similar templates on delaying sports seasons.

I agree and I feel like the author doesn't seem to understand or maybe care that the Redskins name was degrading and derogatory towards native Americans.

The history lesson is nice, but the names should be changed. It’s called cultural appropriation. “ red raiders” seem a good in this day and age?
