SELINSGROVE — Southern Columbia and Shamokin Area’s boys track and field teams combined to win seven championships Saturday at the Jim Taylor High School Invitational at Susquehanna University.

Even missing some standouts who were likely away at various college spring football games, the Tigers managed to win four events, led by senior runner Ethan Knoebel, who won both the 1600 and 800-meter runs. Nate Crowl won the javelin and Troy Donlan the shot put for the Tigers.

Billy Delbaugh (triple jump), Marshall Buggy (110 HH) and Joey Masser (long jump) were winners for the Indians, who had a total of 14 placewinners in the event, in which team scores weren’t kept.

Knoebel, the defending state bronze medalist in the AA 1600, knocked a second off his season best times in winning both his races, going 4:29.18 in the 1600 and 2:03.90 in the 800.

“They weren’t great times but I’m pleased,” the senior said. “I’m ahead of last year in both. Last year I didn’t break 4:30 in the 1600 until Lock Haven (two weeks later in the schedule). I took about a second off in each. I’m looking forward to running against some good runners next week (at the Shippensburg Invitational) and in two weeks (Lock Haven).”

There’s also a rather big dual meet Tuesday, against defending Heartland Athletic Conference Division III champs Mount Carmel. Southern hopes to regain the division title the Red Tornadoes wrested from them last year. Then the Breslin Invitational is at Mount Carmel on Thursday.

Donlan won the shot put (47-10) and was third in the discus (125-11), and Crowl threw 168 feet even to win the javelin.

Buggy’s win in the 110s (15.59) and runnerup finish in the 300 IH (42.20) and a 1-3-5 finish in the long jump, led by defending district AAA champ Masser’s 21-4, paced Shamokin. Schiccatano (20-6) and Delbaugh (20-4) also cleared the 20-foot mark, and Mount Carmel’s Tanner Karycki was runnerup to Masser with a 21-1.5 leap.

Delbaugh added a triple jump of 43-1.5 to win that event.

“Buggy ran six races today,” said Shamokin Area head coach Mike Rogers. “That last race (300 intermediates) was just on pure heart. We’ll take it.”

Although Mount Carmel didn’t have any champs, the Red Tornadoes’ 4 x 100 and 4 x 800 relay teams joined Karycki as runnerups.

Other boys placewinners:

Third — Mount Carmel’s Andrew Rooney (400), Southern’s Jared Rose (300 IH) and Shamokin’s Brian Hornberger (shot put) and both the Indians’ 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays.

Fourth — Mount Carmel’s Derek Lawler (800), Southern’s Brady Reese (3200), Shamokin’s Wolfgang Pearson (pole vault).

Fifth — Shamokin’s Matt Knowles (shot put), Nathan Grimes (discus); Mount Carmel’s Karycki (100).

Sixth — Knowles, (javelin).

Seventh — Buggy (100), Mount Carmel’s Dylan Pupo (800).

GIRLS

Southern Columbia’s Kari Cambria came close to a double triumph on the girls’ side, winning the 100-meter hurdles (15.43) and taking second in the 300 hurdles (48.74). She also ran on the runnerup 4 x 100 relay team. Mount Carmel’s Caroline Fletcher was runnerup in the 800 and was part of the Red Tornadoes’ third-place 4 x 800 relay.

Shamokin’s Emma Kramer was runnerup in the javelin (116-0).

Southern’s Haley Scopellitti was runnerup in an exhibition 2000-meter steeplechase.

Other girls placewinners:

Fourth — Southern’s Hanna Davis, 400; Mount Carmel’s Claudia Morris (110 HH), and Shamokin’s Danielle Hinkle (steeplechase).

Fifth — Mount Carmel’s Dani Rae Renno (discus) and Payton Carl (javelin).

Sixth — Shamokin’s Chloe Yoder (100 hurdles); Mount Carmel’s 4 x 400 relay.

Seventh — Mount Carmel’s Molly Petrucci (800) and Morris (300 hurdles); Shamokin’s 4 x 100 relay.

Eighth — Shamokin 4 x 400 relay; Southern’s Kayla Hauer (javelin).
