Keefer, Reed catch lunkers

Gerald Keefer, Laureldale, won the Adult Division with a 9.56-pound catfish and Mike Reed, Deer Lake, won the Junior Division with a 9.10-pound catfish, Saturday, July 27, the opening day of the month-long Deer Lake Catfish Derby.

This annual event benefits the Deer Lake and West Brunswick Fire Company No. 42.

Organizers said the 186 entries set a record, but just 8-of-30 tagged fish were caught opening day.

MCWMA posts hunts

Those looking to participate in Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area’s five different controlled hunts will need to apply online instead of sending in postcard applications. Hunters can visit one website to apply for each of the five controlled or permitted hunts at Middle Creek. They can access the website by going to www.pgc.pa.gov and clicking Controlled Hunt Applications under the “Quick Links” tab.
