49ers Chiefs Super Bowl Football

Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach, a graduate of Mount Carmel Area High School, kisses the trophy after his team defeated the San Francisco 49ers in NFL Super Bowl 54 football game Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020, in Miami Gardens, Florida.

While waiting to interview 2019 Lourdes Regional graduate Thomas Schultz after a high school baseball game between Shamokin and Mount Carmel over a year ago, a professional scout stood by and — kindly making small talk — asked an assuming rhetorical question anyone would about a small area, saying, “I guess things like this don’t happen around here too often, huh?”

Though there is local history of area athletes in professional sports and baseball in particularly — like Coal Township’s Coveleski brothers — it would’ve been a brash reaction to start rattling off athletes from the coal region who played professionally.
