Shamokin Area High School softball players wear the initials “D.K.” in memory of Dick Kashner during a game Tuesday afternoon against Danville. Kashner, the father of assistant coach and athletic director Rick Kashner, left, involved himself with many volunteer organizations prior to his passing Feb. 14 at the age of 84. Story, photos Page A14.

Former Shamokin Area head softball coach and athletic director Rick Kashner was “flattered” to learn the Indians players and new head coach Jared Petrovich decided to honor Kashner’s dad, the late Dick Kashner, by sporting the initials DK on the sleeves of their new uniforms this season.

Kashner, the longtime Shamokin youth sports promoter and caretaker of the Bunker Hill fields, died in January. Compounding that loss, his wife and Rick’s mother, Merle, died 18 days later.
