Retirement and verbal abuse have led to a decrease in game officials across the commonwealth. Referees and umpires are a necessary component for any high school sport, but there is growing concern about the lack of officials, and especially small influx of new officials.

According to statistics from the PIAA, the number of officials in all sports recently dropped from 16,269 to 15,159, a change of almost 7%. Some athletic directors have expressed concern that game schedules could be impacted.
